State of Nebraska Archives: on Gun Control

Don Bacon: Gun control means only criminals have guns

I will protect your Bill of Rights. Gun control is a recipe for only the criminals having guns. I am a member of the NRA and the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association and proud of it.

Ben Sasse: Self-described as pro-guns and pro-life

Enrollment has nearly doubled since he arrived, and was already growing at the fastest pace among Nebraska colleges when Midland recently bought Dana College in Blair, a Lutheran college that closed in 2010.

Sasse has also worked to "reinvent freshman year" to help students make the transition from high school--where they "have to get permission to pee"--to college.

"We decided not to waste a crisis," he said, quoting Rahm Emanuel, Obama's former chief of staff and now mayor of Chicago, recently dubbed "Chicago Bull" by Time magazine. Yes, that Rahm.

Sasse may be a self-described right-wing conservative--pro-guns and pro-life--but he isn't afraid to credit Emanuel with being "incredibly effective" at things such as reducing crime.

He also admits he's never run for public office before, and so is probably breaking some of the cardinal rules with such comments.

Deb Fischer: Support stand-your-ground self-defense laws

The candidates all declared their support for such conservative platforms as federal spending reductions and repeal of the national health care reform law. They also all stated support for stand-your-ground self-defense laws, which give people latitude to use deadly force rather than retreat from danger. That type of law has been much discussed following the February fatal shooting of an unarmed teenager by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida.

Don Stenberg: Opposed nominee for stripping Americans of gun rights

Bruning tried to portray himself as the only Republican in the field who can defeat the presumed Democratic nominee, former U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey. Bruning talked several times about his efforts to defeat Obama's health-care measure, noting he was one of the first attorneys general to file a lawsuit against the controversial law. Bruning condemned the growth of "nanny government."

Dave Heineman: Harsher punishment for unlawful handguns

LB 63 addresses violent crime by enacting increased penalties and new crimes, creating an Office of Violence Prevention. It strengthens penalties for crimes including first degree assault, assault of an officer, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a firearm at a school, and possession of a stolen firearm. These measures can help address violent crime in our urban areas. It will give our partners in law enforcement and the judicial branch new tools to help with prevention efforts.
