FactCheck: Guns cause more deaths than bats & hammers

State Sen. Bill Jackson said, "There's more murders with hammers last year than shotguns and pistols and AK-47s." Two days later, US Rep. Paul Broun said: "There are more people killed with baseball bats and hammers than are killed with guns." Is it true

In January, some pro-gun rights Facebook posts began to circulate: "According to the FBI, in 2011, 1,694 were murdered with knives, 726 with hands or feet, 496 with clubs or hammers, 323 with rifles of any type," it read. PolitiFact reviewed 2011 FBI data on the types of weapons used to commit murders; the Facebook numbers nearly matched. So, using selective data, Sen. Jackson's claim is true: more people were killed with hammers than specific types of guns.

Broun's statement is not as specific as Jackson's. FBI data shows that 6,220 Americans were murdered by handguns in 2011. That's more than 12 times the number of people killed with clubs or hammers. Broun's general use of "guns" by its nature includes handguns. That makes his statement way off

National cross-state standard for concealed carry.

Establishes a national standard for the carrying of concealed firearms (other than a machinegun or destructive device) by non-residents. Authorizes a person who has a valid permit to carry a concealed firearm in one state and who is not prohibited from carrying a firearm under federal law to carry a concealed firearm in another state:

Loosen restrictions on interstate gun purchases.

Broun co-sponsored Firearms Interstate Commerce Reform Act

Congressional Summary:Amends the federal criminal code to:

  • allow licensed firearms dealers to sell or deliver any firearm (currently, rifles or shotguns) to any state if the licensee meets with the purchaser and the transaction complies with the laws of the state in which the transfer is conducted and the purchaser's state of residence; and
  • eliminate the requirement that a licensee must conduct business at a gun show only in the state that is specified on the licensee's license.
  • Nothing in this Act shall prohibit the sale of a firearm or ammunition between licensed firearms dealers at any location in any state.

Proponent's Comments (NRA-ILA, Oct. 14, 2011): This bill would remove several antiquated and unnecessary restrictions imposed on interstate firearms business since 1968:
